Defense Minister resigns over plagarism



The Chancellor of Germany, Angela Marcel was caught by surprise after getting an early morning call from his Defense Minister, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg (pictured on above) that he has resigned from the cabinet.

According to the famous political website, Spiegel Online, the popular politician also adviser to the Chancellor, zu Guttenberg resigned from his post following allegation of plagiarism scandal over his PhD dissertation on 1 March 2011

Zu Guttenberg who was nominated by CSU Chairman Horst Seehoferto succeed Michael Glos who stepped down as Minister of Economics and Technology in the Federal Government on 9 February 2009. After he was formally nominated by Angela Merkel the same day, Guttenberg was appointed by President Horst Kohler on 10 February 2009, according to Wikipedia

Guttenberg was sworn in by Parliament on 12 February 2009. In the summer of 2009, he surpassed Chancellor Angela Merkel as the most popular politician in Germany.


Guttenberg, was appointed as a Minister of Defense of Germany in the second cabinet of Chancellor Angela Merkel, on 28 October 2009, after taking office as Minister of Defense, became the first high-ranking official in Germany to publicly describe the war in Afghanistan, where Germany is the third largest contributor of troops, as a "war", whereas the government had previously insisted it was not a war.
